Mistakes to Avoid When Designing UNIX Daemon Programs

Guilty. But this is useful.

This article succintly describes mistakes that you should avoid when designing programs that are meant to run as daemons. (cough, MySQL, take note). Although I think it's reasonable to ignore the "don't deal with TCP/IP directly" recommendation.
