Iraq: A Call To Action

Do something.

Reasons to Go To Iraq (pre-invasion)

Reasons to Go To Iraq (post-invasion)

  • We prevent Iraq from using their to-be-developed weapons of mass destruction against us,
  • Saddam Hussein was a tyrant.
  • We send a message to other nation-states that we are not to be fucked with. (e.g. Libya)
  • We plant the seed of the concept of democracy within a nation in the Middle East.

Post-Mortem (common sense)

  • The primary reason given to invade was proved to be false.
  • The Iraq war is taking money away from efforts to get better intelligence and protect America from actual terrorist threats.
  • We have lost the support of nations who were once sympathetic (and could provide support) to our cause of waging a "war on terror".
  • Obviously impossible to prove scientifically, but it stands to reason that by occupying a country in that region we are turning people against us who may subsequently become terrorists (or at least sympathetic to terrorists).
  • Installing a government by force (democratic or not) onto a people who didn't ask for it is not likely to be successful.
  • People are dying.

Don't let this stand! Get pissed off! Make a difference! Write your congressman . And your senator . Be polite, but let them know where you stand. Let's put some pressure on these people to do the right thing. Let's get the hell out of Iraq and get back to a sane order of business.

...

Will sending a letter really matter? As far as I can tell they aren't paying attention. They don't seem to pay much attention to protesting either. I'm rather at a loss to think of something they do pay attention to.

yes

Don't get discouraged. They are paying attention if only for that brief time you bring it up. If you don't bring it up, they are guaranteed to not pay attention. If you need a bit of pick-me-up, try reading Robert Kennedy's "day of affirmation" speech at http://www.jfklibrary.org/r060666a.htm (the most relevant part of which starts "first is the danger of futility...")
